Redlisted Societal Function #1

Performance and part of final work for Överraska, variera och Förändra 2022-2024,
a public commission for the municipality of Jönköping


The location LogPoint South in Hyltena, Jönköping was a perfect place for the final marking. LogPoint South was also classified as a secure site, which which means it must be guarded around the clock, which made my work a little safer. Speaking of safety, the walk to the site in question was dangerous for both the drivers and the audience. A pedestrian crosswalk was missing. It is planned and in the future there will probably be a solution to the problem.

One night in June—between the 12th and 13th—the road was closed for a four-hour performance titled Redlisted Societal Function #1. During the act, an authentic crosswalk was sprayed, 1:1 scale, using lime spray paint—a preliminary sketch in the hope of speeding up the municipality’s process for installing a real one. By dawn—and as part of the same performance—I washed it off.


Everything was filmed, from ground level and the air—a meticulous record of something destined to vanish.

I wanted all the works to be a functional metaphor for everything that the place lacked.

The project as a whole engaged both invited and temporary audiences, weaving together perspectives from those who came intentionally and those who encountered it by chance. (The American artist Suzanne Lacy’s audience map provides a helpful reference for understanding the range of audiences and the roles they played in this work.)

Over the years, my work has been expressed in various forms, including Scenes 2022-2023 a film and installation at Jönköping's City Library, the performance Redlisted Societal Function #1, performative actions such as Scene 2, 3 Litter-Picking activites, and a permanent installation Redlisted Societal Function #2 at the sites.
