Invitation:
Dear friends,

At the millennial threshold, about a decade after the paradigmatic changes of 1989, the pressures of globalization on the production of knowledge were met, among other things, with a world-wide emergence of contemporary art magazines. Many came out of particularly intense collaborations between philosophers or critical theorists and artists, and often in contexts characterized by the anti-theoretical drive of mainstream culture industries: IDEA (1999), Afterall (2000), Cabinet (2000), Chto Delat (2003), Dérive (2000), Grey Room (2000), Springerin (2001), Prelom (2001), Brumaria (2002), Yishu (2002), Bidoun (2004), Reartikulacija (2007), or Red Thread (2009).

Each of these magazines worked at finding an enlightening or critical orientation in the contemporary cultural practices: some addressed areas of critical thought or an extended notion of culture, others created their own spaces of resistance, or tried to immerse artists in critical communities, or to extend the fields of contemporary arts and of theory, yet others focused on critical artists, on counter-histories, other geographies of knowledge, radical imaginaries, on group or collective expressions, or explored the possibilities of criticality or radicalism in arts, theory, and activism.

We reached our 50th issue. Instead of a regular celebrationwe would like each artist from our gallery section and each close collaborator to answer a question for us: how do they see the role played by contemporary art journals in the current context? The question asks to describe a little this context, to explain your own position within it and to make us understand your own relationship with contemporary art journals. Also, we would also be interested in potential typologies of journals, their genealogies, their purpose, etc.

How did the intense presence of critical theory in the spaces of contemporary art in the past decade inspire or inhibit you? How does a contemporary art journal like IDEA play a role in your relation to the “international circuit of contemporary art”, or in your imaginary of it? What did we gain from working together in the fields of contemporary cultural practices? What would be, for you, the ideal role of a critical contemporary arts journal, or the ideal critical companion to artists? And how do you relate your hopes and directions of creation to criticality?

It is up to you whether you would like to write us a text or to present us with an artistic project. The surface available is 2 pages in the journal. We would very much appreciate if you honored us with a contribution.

The dead-line is September 20, 2016.
Warmly thanking you in advance,

Timotei N?d??an
